The Shaw Family - Calcutta, India

Shaw Family Newsletter (March 2014)

India has the second largest population of over 1.2 billion people after China. It is a country of various languages, people groups and over 330 million Hindu gods. 88% have not yet heard the gospel.

Stewart and Monique were called to Kolkata, India in November 1999 along with their three young children. Their burden is for people addicted to substance abuse and to those in the sex trade. Isaiah 61:1

Train Track Ministry
The Howrah and Sealdah train station are home to hundreds of street kids who have run away from abuse. They sniff glue to suppress their hunger pains and to escape from their misery. They are often vulnerable to sickness and danger.

Since 2002, Stewart and his team have been ministering to addict kids at the train stations. As part of the ministry outreach, God's love is shown in very practical ways such as feeding over one hundred children daily and treating their minor wounds and injuries. The gospel is shared with the youth and children who come to the feeding program.

Children's Home
As a result of the train track outreach, a children's home has been established outside of the city in a rural area. The children who live there are from the train stations and have become part of a beautiful family with loving staff who care for the well- being of each child. The children are provided with a good education enabling them to lead a better future. They attend Sunday School weekly and have daily devotion times at the home.

Ministry to women in the sex trade
There are more than 60,000 women in the sex trade in kolkata, India. In 2005, Monique began to minister to the sex-workers in Kalighat, one of the red- light areas of Kolkata. An important part of the ministry is visiting the women regularly in the red light area to develop relationships with them. Many of the women invite the team to their room for tea and to pray for them.

Jewels in a Crown Vocational Unit
In February 14, 2011, Jewels in a Crown opened its doors as a means of providing an income for the women who leave the sex trade. It is a non-profit jewelry business with a holistic approach caring for the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of women who have been trafficked into prostitution. The women are trained in jewelry-making and work with a variety of high-end, semi-precious stones. The pieces are sold in North America providing an income for the women.

Each woman is a precious jewel being polished and shaped into a person of beauty and dignity. The aim of Jewels in a Crown is to inspire each woman to shine, empowering them through education, jewelry training and spiritual development so they can live a life of purpose and dignity.
